When Catey Hall checks in on her dad, it’s not unusual to find him stretched out on the sofa. But he’s never napping alone—dogs from all over the neighborhood join him, creating one big, cozy pile.
“Dad sees, plays with, and snoozes with one or more of these dogs daily,” Hall told The Dodo. “They come running when they see his car and follow him inside.”
A Lifelong Love for Dogs
Hall’s father, Lon Watson, has always had a deep love for dogs. He works with a local rescue organization, Pound on the Hill, to ensure every stray animal gets the care they need.
“For as long as I can remember, my dad has saved stray dogs,” Hall said. “Growing up, we always had a dog. But there was always room for a stray in need.”
Now living with his wife, Watson continues his mission. While they help local rescues find homes for dogs, not every dog gets re-homed. Some stay with Watson forever, becoming part of the family.
Currently, Watson has four resident dogs that he and his wife have rescued and rehabilitated. But his home is also a daily gathering spot for neighborhood dogs, including Hooch, Fluffer-Nutter, and Rosie, who all share a special bond with him.
A Neighborhood Favorite
The dogs eagerly wait for Watson’s truck to pull into the driveway, ready for their moment of attention and affection.
“The neighborhood is an unincorporated area in semi-rural Alabama, where houses are set far back from the road,” Hall explained. “The dogs roam freely and safely between houses. When they hear my dad’s truck, they rush to meet him in the driveway.”
Fortunately, the human neighbors don’t mind their dogs spending most of their time with Watson. In fact, they wouldn’t dream of interrupting the unique bond he shares with the dogs—or their special naptime sessions.
A Dog Whisperer
Watson seems to have a way with every dog he meets. Even Hall’s own two dogs try to tag along whenever Watson visits her home.
“In fact, they try to leave with Dad when he’s here visiting,” Hall said.
Lon Watson’s compassion and kindness have made him a hero to countless dogs, both in his own home and throughout the neighborhood. His selfless dedication is a reminder of the powerful connection between humans and their furry companions.
