The dog had been adopted from a shelter in Novosibirsk, Russia, run by Alla Morozova. However, six months later, her adoptive owners claimed they had developed allergies and decided to return her. Arrangements were made for Maru to travel back to the shelter by train with an assistant to accompany her.
During the journey, after approximately 125 miles (201 km), Maru panicked due to the loud noises of the train. Overcome with fear and distress, she managed to push open the compartment door and escape at a station near Achinsk.
Despite efforts to restrain her, Maru ran off. Her handler immediately informed her former owners, who, in turn, notified Alla. However, the couple refused to assist in searching for her, displaying little concern for her whereabouts.
Maru embarked on an incredible trek, determined to return to the home that had rejected her. She navigated the harsh Siberian wilderness, where dangers such as brown bears and wolves lurked.
Alla took action by spreading the word about Maru’s disappearance through flyers and social media. After two and a half days, Maru was finally found in an industrial district of Krasnoyarsk. Exhausted, injured, and with what rescuers described as “tears in her eyes,” she was desperately trying to reach her former home.
She had endured an incredibly perilous journey, suffering bruises and wounds on her paws, legs, and mouth. Maru had even fallen from a train embankment, adding to her injuries. Despite the odds, her strong sense of loyalty had driven her to attempt the impossible.
Alla expressed amazement at Maru’s ability to navigate back, given that she had never explored beyond the courtyard of her previous home. Had she not been injured, she would have likely completed her journey.
Now, Maru is receiving medical treatment for her injuries and undergoing therapy to heal from her emotional trauma at the Novosibirsk shelter. She is back in the care of the shelter’s dedicated staff, who are committed to helping her recover.
