Last week, on a scorching hot day in Tennessee, Kaye Fiorello was driving along the highway when she noticed a state trooper parked on the side of the road. At the time, she didn’t think much of it, but it would soon turn into something truly meaningful.
As she continued down the road, something caught her eye—something that made her stop and think.
“About a mile away, I saw the head of a small dog appear on the side of the road,” Fiorello told The Dodo. “It looked like she had been there for quite some time.”
Fiorello knew she had to get help for the abandoned pup, and she knew exactly where to find it.
A Life-Changing Rescue
Thinking of the trooper she had seen earlier, Fiorello turned her car around and headed back. She pulled up beside the officer and told him about the dog—unaware that this simple exchange would change both their lives forever.
“He asked me where she was and immediately went after her,” Fiorello said. “I followed him and pointed out the area.”
When they arrived, they saw the little dog was injured and scared. At first, she was wary of the officer’s approach, but he gently offered her food and water, trying to earn her trust. But he didn’t stop there.
After calling for animal control assistance, the trooper sat down beside the puppy, holding an umbrella over her to shield her from the scorching sun.
An Instant Connection
Seeing the officer’s dedication to the dog, Fiorello was deeply moved.
“He told me, ‘I’m going to sit here until she trusts me,’” Fiorello recalled, adding that the pup seemed to sense the trooper’s kind heart. “She let out a sigh of relief. And those gentle, doe-like eyes… the difference was night and day. They connected. It was powerful. I was crying tears of joy for that sweet girl.”
And it turned out this connection was meant to last.
A New Beginning
Fiorello had to continue on her way before help arrived, but she later learned that the dog had been successfully rescued and taken to the vet for treatment. She had suffered a fractured hip, but she wouldn’t have to go through recovery alone.
The officer would be by her side every step of the way.
A Forever Home
One week after being found injured and alone on the roadside, the little dog finally found a home—the trooper who rescued her decided to keep her forever.
“She’s been adopted! He took her home today!” Fiorello said. “Her name is Princesa, and she’ll be coming home from the vet in a couple of weeks, maybe two.”
Thanks to one compassionate officer, Princesa now has the loving home she always deserved.
