Bentley Madsen was the couple’s first “child.” However, Bentley, who became part of their family in 2017, was not a human baby but a beloved four-legged companion.
For Brandon and Kelly from Washington, D.C., Bentley had always been like a child to them. However, when their firstborn son, Tyler, arrived in February of last year, he naturally became the center of attention. Amusingly, Bentley was determined to be part of the special moment when the couple decided to document their newborn’s early days with a photo session.
Bentley, now five years old, is a goldendoodle known for being “goofy, quirky, smart, loyal, and loving,” Kelly shared with The Epoch Times. Among his many unique traits is his complete inability to catch a ball, which only adds to his charm.
Despite Bentley’s playful nature, the couple was cautious about introducing their newborn to him.
“We sent home a blanket and hat from the hospital that carried Tyler’s scent so Bentley could get used to it first,” Kelly explained. “Once we were discharged two days later, we allowed Bentley to greet and sniff Tyler while we showered him with love and affection. And that’s where their friendship truly began.”
Bentley was immediately fascinated by Tyler, often approaching him whenever he cried. He even sensed Tyler’s distress before his parents did, earning him the nickname “baby monitor.”
From that moment on, Bentley rarely left Tyler’s side, whether he was napping or playing with his parents. Their bond grew even stronger as Tyler eventually learned how to share food scraps with Bentley—a friendship sealed by treats.
“We knew we wanted to capture the newborn stage with a special photo session,” Kelly said. “But when everything was set up, Bentley had no intention of staying on the sidelines.”
To save on hiring a professional photographer, they opted for a home photoshoot.
“We got everything ready, placed Tyler in position, and then Bentley showed up!” Kelly recalled. Having been a constant companion during Tyler’s infancy, Bentley was used to being in the spotlight and having his picture taken.
No matter where they positioned Tyler, Bentley insisted on either lying next to him or resting his head on him—demonstrating their unbreakable bond.
That memorable photoshoot took place a year ago. In February of last year, Tyler turned one, and his parents had spent an entire year capturing his growth in photos—including his first birthday celebration. And standing faithfully beside Tyler in each picture? None other than Bentley!
Reflecting on their growing connection, Kelly remarked, “Bentley and Tyler’s adventures are just beginning!” She added with a smile, “I wouldn’t be surprised if Tyler’s first word is ‘Bentley.’”
