Smiley, the beloved blind Golden Retriever who touched countless hearts, has crossed the rainbow bridge. After a courageous three-month battle with cancer, Smiley was peacefully put to sleep at the age of 15. Despite his challenges, he spent most of his life as a therapy dog, bringing comfort and happiness to those in need.
His owner, Joanne George, made the difficult decision to say goodbye, sharing on Instagram, “It’s the only way to repay all he’s done for us. We’ll release him tomorrow. He’s had enough.”
A Life of Unwavering Kindness
Throughout his years of service, Smiley provided solace to patients in hospitals and nursing homes in his hometown of Stouffville, Ontario. He formed connections with elderly residents, autistic children, and individuals of all ages who needed his comforting presence. However, his influence extended far beyond Canada, as he gained a devoted following of more than 200,000 fans on Instagram.
Among those who will miss Smiley the most is George’s young son, Shepard, who considered him his “real-life stuffed animal.” One of the final photos Joanne shared was of Shepard visiting Smiley’s resting place, accompanied by a heartfelt message:
“A boy and his dog must part ways eventually. Shepard knows this pain he’s feeling is the result of loving with all his heart. Like me, he has no regrets. The pain is worth all the joy Smiley gave us.”
A Heartbreaking Diagnosis
Joanne first announced Smiley’s cancer diagnosis months earlier, expressing her sorrow on Facebook:
“Not easy to type this out … they found a mass on Smiley’s stomach and one on his liver. The dog who I thought would live forever doesn’t have much time left. We are shocked and devastated.”
Despite his illness, Smiley remained joyful, his spirit undiminished, and continued to brighten the lives of those around him until the very end.
A Lasting Legacy
Following Smiley’s passing, CBC Toronto created a touching tribute video celebrating his incredible life. The outpouring of love from people worldwide proved just how special he was. One commenter wrote,
“With Smiley’s passing, I’m reminded that there are still wonderful, caring people in this world.”
While Smiley is no longer physically present, his legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering positivity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Smiley wouldn’t want his friends to dwell in sadness. Instead, he’d encourage them to find joy in stories of kindness and hope—just as he did throughout his remarkable life.
